Stamping with Leaves

There was a fun Ways to Use It challenge over at Splitcoaststampers last week -  Stamping with leaves - where you go out in your yard and find some leaves - press them into your ink pad and then press them onto your cardstock!  

I used plant leaves instead of tree leaves - and look how pretty they came out!

For my first try -  I used 3 leaves from my pink geranium and 3 different colors of Wendy Vecchi Archival Ink -  Orange Blossom, Cornflower Blue, Fern Green.

I stamped a sentiment from Simple Stems by PTI in the same colors of ink.  I used Tim Holtz Mini Scallop die - 3D Impresslits (it die cuts and embosses in one swoop!) with metallic green paper for the lovely border along the bottom.  The blue frame is cut with Scallop Stackers Small die from PTI and the green border is Noted: Scalloped A2 die also from PTI.   I also splattered some Yellow Oxide Acrylic Paint mixed with water over the panel.

The Process:  I laid a leaf onto the ink pad.   Then I placed a piece of computer paper over the leaf and ink pad so I could really press on the leaf without getting all inky!  Then I removed the leaf from the ink pad and laid it onto a watercolor paper panel. Again, I laid a clean sheet of computer paper over the  panel and rubbed over the leaf to get as good an impression as possible.  I repeated the process with other leaves in other colors.

My next try was with a leaf from a ground cover plant I have in my garden -  I had forgotten the name of it - it has bright yellow flowers in the spring early summer.  I looked it up in my Garden Flowers Book and I think it is Spring Cinquefoil.

The veins in the leaves are more prominent than the fleshy parts. I wasn't sure how the leaves would show up over the text stamping (a panel I had on my desk from a previous project) but I love how it came out!

I die cut the panel with Noted: Pinked A2 Vertical Die from PTI and layered it to a green panel and a die cut blue panel using the same Pinked die set. I added three black rhinestones. I didn't put a sentiment on it - I will probably either just use it for a note or stamp a sentiment inside for an appropriate occasion!

Here are the leaves of this ground cover - the yellow blooms long past but will return next spring!

So - give it a try!  Ink up some leaves and stamp them on your cards!

Be Still

Today I have a card to share that features a photo I took in my garden.

The plant is Solomon's Seal and I purchased it many years ago at the Garden in the Woods in Framingham, MA.   It tends to spread so you need to put it in an area that you want it to fill!

This is one area I planted it in our front yard under our beautiful Japanese Maple.  

There are a few other plants here as well - but the Solomon's seal takes up the whole left side! 

I will probably prune some out at the end of this season!

Here's a little info on the history of the Solomon's Seal plant for all you gardeners out there!

Solomon's Seal is named for King Solomon of Hebrew lore who was granted great wisdom by the Hebrew God and had a special seal that aided him in his magical workings, allowing him to command demons without coming to harm. According to herbal lore, King Solomon himself placed his seal upon this plant when he recognized its great value. Those with imagination can see the seal on the rootstock in the circular scars left by the stem after it dies back.

Solomon's Seal has a rich history that goes back many thousands of years. Herbalists and healers, both in Europe and North America and the Far East, have written about its diverse effects on numerous conditions. In 2010, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (Natural Resources Conservation Service) identified Solomon's Seal as a Culturally Significant Plant, noting its medicinal and restorative value among North American Tribal (Original Nation) peoples. It is our understanding that the National Institutes of Health is presently researching the benefits of Solomon's Seal for heart health.

Sharing a few Cards!

Just wanted to share a few cards that I've made in the past few days for various challenges over at Splitcoaststampers!

This card was made for the Inspiration Challenge. 

I was inspired by this Ceramic Tree Bowl on Audrie's My New House Idea Pinterest board.

Loll gifted me the die for this lovely tree (thank you Loll!) that I cut out of Kraft Core Coredinations paper and sanded a bit to distress it. I popped it up on the Soft Stone panel cut with a stitched edge rectangle die from Lil Inker to try and make shadows like on the bowl.
I stamped this lovely sentiment from a stamp set by my friend Alison Bomber for PaperArtsy using Cocoa Bean Ink and layered it all to a white card base.

  I made these cute pumpkin place settings (or decorations) for this week's Try a New Technique challenge - 3D pumpkin placecards! (you can find the tutorial on SCS  here if you are a member)

 I made my pumpkins 2" so I used 6 pieces of DP for each pumpkin, measuring 1/2" x 6" each. I used ScorTape to adhere the strip ends.

I adhered my pumpkins to die cut leaves that were adhered to grunge board to make them sturdy. I used Kraft Core paper for the leaves and sanded them so some of the kraft showed through.

I made the stem of my pumpkins out of short pieces of real cinnamon sticks and knotted three pieces of green twine around the stems. The words are Big Chat Stickers that I layered to brown card and adhered to the stems with my hot glue gun.

My last card was made for several challenges at SCS, the Ways to Use It Challenge - to use a light house, the Free 4 All challenge to use an encouraging sentiment, and the Featured Stamper who was Sue this week, and I CASED  this lovely light house card in her gallery.

I made my background by rubbing Broken China Distress ink and Salty Ocean Distress Oxide ink on my craft mat, spritzed with water and then dragged a panel of watercolor paper though the inks, drying, re-dragging through the inks, drying - until I was happy with how it looked.

Then I cut a piece of computer paper with a wavy line (I actually have a paper cutter that does that!) and laid the mask along the bottom of my panel and sponged with Walnut Stain Distress to create the darker layer of earth - moved the mask up a little and sponged again with Frayed Burlap Distress ink to make a lighter layer of earth.

I die cut and stamped the light house, sponged one side with Frayed Burlap and layered it over the panel with foam dots. I stamped the birds and sentiment directly onto the panel.
 

and I wanted to share a 2nd card I made just like the one above but used MultiMedia Paper instead of Watercolor paper for the panel - and used a mix of different blue Distress and Oxide inks - every time you make a background with this technique it comes out differently!

A group at my church sends out cards to the elderly at home and I thought these cards would work well for that purpose.

Golden Antlers

First, let me say that I am not a fan of hunting, deer or pheasant, bear or duck - but I do understand that sometimes it is necessary to keep a population down so it will stay healthy.  Having said this -  today I used a die called Trophy Antlers on my card. 

I used Tim's Arch Frame die to cut the background for my antlers using a piece of patterned paper from Paperstash/Merriment. I sponged the edges of the arch with Ranger Distress Ground Espresso.   I gold embossed the antlers and mounted them to the arch with foam dots.  There's another piece from Merriment behind the arch.  I dropped some Adirondack Gold Mixative onto 3 Mirrored Stars and adhered them around the arch.

I used the CHRISTMAS die from Holiday Words/Block to cut the sentiment in red - then adhered it to a piece of Brushed Gold from SU and layered it over the bottom of the arch.

 I'm happy to have another card ready to send out for Christmas!

This simple little 'Thanks Snow Much' card was created for 3 challenges.

The Ways to Use it Challenge on Split Coast last week was to use snow.

The Inspiration Challenge was a lovely web site Layla Grace and I was inspired by the colors on these pretty drapes.

 and this week's CASology Cue Card is winter.

The pine tree and snowflakes stamps are from PTI - In the Meadow Set - the tree die is PTI and the Thanks Snow Much is from Winter Wishes from a jillian vance design. I popped the tree up on foam tape. My card is 4 1/4" x 4 1/4".

It's been quite unseasonably warm here in MA this weekend - high 40's maybe 50 although overcast and a little wet - not like winter at all, and we even saw a robin in our backyard yesterday (in January???!!!)  I don't think I have ever seen a robin back so early - they are one of the first harbingers of Spring here -  and we really haven't had any winter yet??!!

The End of 2012

Wow -  I can't believe I haven't posted all week!   I've been home on vacation - and stamping - but not posting here -  so -  I have a few things to share as the good old year of 2012 comes to a close!

First I have a Christmas Day family picture to share - unfortunately DH Kent had to work (!) - so he is missing from the pic.  I did bring him home a Christmas dinner and we opened our gifts Christmas night.

My first card to share was made for the Split Coast Inspiration Challenge - inspired by this white, gold and black East Six invitation from the Wedding Bells web site.

I've been needing Anniversary Cards for my stash - so that is what I made for my card.

I gold embossed everything on this card!  The camellia flower, the sentiment and the lovely background.  I die cut the sentiment with Labels 25 Nestabilities and popped it up on the card with foam tape.  I added a little red heart gem for just a touch of color!

I made this second card for the Ways To Use It challenge on Split Coast -  to show what your 2012 Resolution had been -  mine was to USE MY STUFF!!  I used this Poppy Patch Spellbinders die that I purchased some time ago and hadn't used yet!

 

After I die cut the poppy patch - I sponged the poppies with Ranger Distress Festive Berries and the ground with Iced Spruce before removing the die.  I embossed a Nestability square on the front of the card and layered the poppy patch inside the frame with foam tape. Then I just stamped the Thank You in the corner.

So - what are your plans for New Year's Eve???    Kent and I are both working on Monday - so we are going out to eat early when we get home around 6 - then sitting on the sofa and watching the festivities on TV -  locally Boston has a great events going on and then fire works  (we used to go in to it but it can get really cold being out there!) and of course, NYC has the traditional falling ball at midnight!

Chillax

What a great word huh?  the combination of chill and relax - it really gives you the feeling of summer and taking it easy!  I made this card combining 3 challenges over on Split Coast  - Thursday's Way to Use it - a beach theme, Friday's Free for All -  a weather theme  and the Queen for the Day - who was Ina (yellowrose46)

I cased Ina's beautiful Sailing into the Sunset card.  I used different stamps and colors but kept the ocean/summer theme with a bright sun rise over the water on a hot summer day!

These wonderful stamps are from a new set called My Island by Waltzingmouse.

I embossed a rectangle on the card base, stamped the images on white with blue, yellow and orange inks and adhered the panel inside the frame with foam tape. Then I stamped the 'chillax' sentiment on the bottom of the card.  A CAS summer beach card!

Yippee!  the weekend is here!  Maybe we'll go to the beach!  Let's all just chillax!

Goosebumps!

Here's a card I made for the Ways to Use It challenge over on Split Coast a few weeks ago - to use complementing or opposite colors on the color spectrum wheel.

I chose Blue and Orange (although I ended up with a little green where the colors blended!)

I die cut a Labels 16 Nestability from cardstock and used the outside piece as a mask. I placed the mask over my card and I stamped my bud trees with Shimmer Goosebumps Texture  Spray using the Texture Spray Resist technique Beate taught us in the Resources section of SCS.  I was so happy to see Beate's tutorial as I had bought this bottle of Goosebumps stuff but didn't really know what to do with it!!

So - I sprayed the Goosebumps on a Blending tool sponge and dabbed it on the the Bud Trees stamp (washing the stamp off immediately after stamping) and used my hot gun to dry the stamping so I could then sponge over it (still having the mask on my card).  I sponged with Ranger Distress Wild Honey and Chipped Sapphire. And the ink didn't cover where the Goosebumps inked image was (like emboss/resist) - this is really shimmery IRL but it doesn't show in my pic.  Then I just added my punched butterflies and 1 little rhinestone.

Summer Sand Castle

The Bible Verse is from Scripture Collection II by Our Daily Bread Designs.  The herringbone background stamp is from Heirloom Patterns and the green and blue frippery label stampings are from Florentine Frippery by Waltzingmouse.  I sponged the edges of the herringbone panel and the Bible verse with Wild Honey Distress ink.  I love how bright the colors look on this - and the promise of this wonderful verse.......

A Bird Bath in the Garden

Since we've been having 80 degree weather in March here in Massachusetts - it seems perfectly normal to make a card with a summertime birdbath in it!!

This pretty little birdbath is a digi image called Birdie Bathtime from Sweet 'n Sassy Stamps.  I cut the image with a rectangle Nestability sponging the edges with Ranger Distress Tumbled Glass and Shabby Shutters before removing the image from the die.  Then I colored the image with Copics.  The pretty papers are Amy Butler by K& Co and the wave border is a die from MFT.  My sentiment is a rub on by Stampin' Up.

Oh my gosh - don't you just LOVE this Shakespeare quote???!!!

The Ways to Use It challenge over on Split Coast today was to use stickers.

I knew I had tons of stickers from my scrap booking days somewhere and luckily I had a file folder right under my work table labeled 'Valentines'.  I pulled it out - wiped off the dust - and I found a wonderful book of stickers with all kinds of love quotes inside!

I embossed my card base with my Tim Holtz Patchwork embossing folder then just stuck the sticker on top!

It took me longer to figure out where to place the little hearts I decided were needed than to design and make the whole card! At first I just put one on the top left corner - but the old rule of threes was shouting in my head - so this is what I ended up with. Inside I stamped a simple "Be Mine, Valentine"

Now I've got to go back into my stamping room to see what other quotes are in that book of stickers!!

Wonder and Joy

 I made this card for the Ways to Use It Challenge over on Split Coast  - Faux letterpress - or inking your embossing folder inside and then embossing your card stock!

I used my Tim Holtz Tall Pines Sizzix embossing folder - I inked it with Memento Paris Dusk Ink (like navy) - so the trees show the green of the textured card stock (Core dinations) and the surrounding areas were darkened with the ink - I was thinking it would make it look like 'night time' in the forest!?!

The pine panel was punched with my new Martha Stewart Punch (on sale at Joann's!) I added some Diamond Stickles to give it a little shimmer.

The sentiment is the last two words of a larger sentiment stamp from Rubbernecker  - the full stamp says 'Wishing You a Holiday Full of Wonder and Joy"

The sentiment is die cut with Trio Labels by Spellbinders and adhered with foam tape. I added a few rhinestones to the trees to finish it off.

I used the colors from the CR84FN43 challenge.

A Metal Flower, Roots and Wings!

Happy Monday Stampers!   As we speak - Kent and I are traveling to Lake Winnepesaukee (I can never remember how to spell this!!)  in NH to visit a friend who has a camp on the lake there!

I have two cards to share today -  both using Rubbernecker Stamps and both made for challenges over on Split Coast.

My first card was for the Ways To Use It Challenge -  Heavy Metal - to use something metal on your card.

 I chose to make a metal flower using thin sheets of metal cut with the Tim Holtz Tattered Floral Die.  I found the tutorial for making these over at Split Coast in the forums here.

I used the wire grid stamp, a flourish stamp and a sentiment from the Bush set for my card - all Rubbernecker.

My second card was made for the Featured Stamper Challenge.

 MocJen's gallery is full of wonderful CAS (clean and simple) cards which I love doing!  I decided to CASE her  Square Thank You card .

I used a different stamp and sentiment but used the same coloring and CAS design.  The bird on the branch and the sentiment are once again, Rubbernecker.  I colored the image with Copics, used a white gel pen on the colored berries and added some tiny bling along the stems.  The image panel is popped up on foam tape.
 
This card could be used for a new baby -  or for someone who's 'baby' is going away to college, moving into their own apartment, etc!!

My adorable little grand-nephew, Landon, was Christened this past Sunday, so of course Auntie had to make a special card for him. I combined last weeks SCS Sketch with the SCS Ways to Use It challenge - to use twine.


I dry embossed the smallest Nestie cross on the panel then sponged over it with Antique Linen ink. After layering all the panels I tied blue and green twine around and tied them in a knot separating the edges and letting them hang. My stamps are from are from the Celtic Heritage set by Waltzingmouse


And here's mum Katie, my niece, and sweet little Landon - he is wearing the Christening dress that my sister and I wore at our Baptism's as well as my son Josh, niece Katie and her sister Christie. It was made by Aunt Helen, our mother's sister. She was a wonderful seamstress and had never married - so she was always making beautiful dresses for my sister and me.

A Little Glitter on the Evergreen

I made these two cards for the Ways To Use It Challenge on Split Coast last Thursday. The challenge was to use glitter!

My cards are very CAS - I embossed a nestie square in the center of my 4 1/4" x 4 1/4" cards - then I stamped this lovely framed evergreen block from Rubbernecker onto a 2 1/8" x 2 1/8" panel, went over it with my glue pen and sprinkled glitter over it. I adhered the panel inside the embossed frame with foam tape.

On the top card I used Dazzling Diamonds which makes it look like it has snow on the branch. (can you see it on my pic??)

For the 2nd card I used a blue topaz coarse glitter. I like how it added the touch of another color to the green stamping of the branch.

I'll stamp a sentiment inside depending on whether I need this as a Christmas card or for some other occasion after the holidays!
