Group of Seven Cardmakers - September Post - 3D Embossing with a Twist

Today I'm sharing the cards I made using this month's Group of 7 Cardmakers technique - which is 3D Embossing with a fun twist!

The fun twist is that you  ink up the debossed side of an embossing folder with black ink and emboss your water colored with reinkers panel which creates a black background around the colorful embossed image!

You'll find a link to a tutorial by Devid Roodenburg over at the Group of 7 blog as well as some beautiful inspiration from the rest of the seven!

Here are the 4 cards I created using this technique.

Here's how I created my cards:

Misted both sides of a panel of watercolor paper with water.

Dropped 2-3 colors of reinker inks onto my craft mat and used a wet paintbrush to spread one color at a time over the panel. Painted equal amounts of each color on the panel randomly.

Dried panel with heat tool or set aside for an hour to dry.

Inked the debossed side of a 3D embossing folder with Nocturne Versafine Clair ink

Placed the water colored panel in the embossing folder, color side over the black inked side, and ran through my Big Shot.

Some photos of each card as I was creating.

I started with this.
Ranger Distress Reinkers: Peeled Paint and Stormy Sky

And created this
Tall Pines EF
I started with this:
Ranger Distress Inks Rusty Hinge, Wild Honey and Tea Dye

and created this
Acorns EF
I started with this:
Ranger Distress Reinkers Cracked Pistachio, Shabby Shutters, Peeled Paint
I made two panels for this one
and created this
Glorious Leaves EF
I started with this
Ranger Distress Reinkers Worn Lipstick, Festive Berries, Fired Brick

I made two panels for this
and created this
Poinsettia EF

Notes:

1.  The background is supposed to be solid black.  I could have tried to reink the folder and emboss again OR gone over the background with a marker but I decided to leave them the way they came out with the first embossing. I was afraid I would misalign the folder, or the black ink and black marker wouldn't look good together -  So I  get a B- for the class (!) not following directions....

2.  If you don't have any water friendly reinkers - try smooshing Distress Ink pads onto your craft mat and use a wet brush to apply the ink to the misted watercolor paper.

3.  I found that each 3D embossing folder seems to be a slightly different thickness and had to adjust the sandwich used to emboss.  (Don't force it through your machine!)

4.  When I look at my panels -  it seems that the parts that didn't fully color with black are where the pressure rollers might be on my Big Shot as it definitely looks like a  vertical linear miss along both outside edges.  Maybe I need a new machine...?

5.  I also tried a few embossing folders that did not work well with this technique before finding some that did!  Don't give up!

Be sure to check out the tutorial, listed supplies and instructions, and all the wonderful samples by the rest of the Group of 7 over at the blog!

You can also link up your creations using this technique there!  We'd love to see what you do!

Inkspirational Challenge #299 - CAS Loss of Pet Sympathy

Inkspirational Challenge #299 has just been posted - and it is Clean and Simple with the optional twist - Inspired by a Movie.
As I was just getting ready to make my Design Team card for this challenge, a friend asked if I could create a card for her friend who just lost her sweet little dog, Tessa,  to cancer.  So I went with Clean and Simple on my card and did not do the optional twist of being inspired by a movie.
My friend said she didn't know what kind of dog Tessa was but she was a little white 'fluff ball' with black eyes.  So this little pup on my card was the closest dog image I had to fit that description!
The pup is from Dog Kisses by Stampendous.  The sentiment is from Rainbow Bridge by Honey Bee.

If I was going to be inspired by a movie - it could have been Hotel for Dogs:  the film tells the story of two orphaned siblings (living in foster care), who secretly take in stray dogs along with their family dog at a vacant hotel.

I didn't see the movie - but they have some white 'fluff ball' dogs on their poster!

So, please join us and link up your Clean and Simple Card (maybe inspired by a movie?) over at Inkspirational!

You have until Oct 6th to link up!

Thanksgiving Pie

I got this fun To Pie For die from The Greetery a few weeks ago and just had to start "baking" pies!

I used another new die - Herringbone Parquet for the background and an older release Coaster Die  under the pie- all from The Greetery.  I sponged over all the die cut pieces with DOX Tea Dye and Vintage Photo.

Shaking Loads of Love

I'm trying to use stamps and dies that have been lingering in my craft room drawers with no attention!

I love shaker cards and I think I have only used this fun clothes washer (or dryer?!) die once (and it must be at least 5 years old)!  I stuck the white clothes to the inside of the clear acetate on the washer and put little colorful hearts inside the shaker well.  I used a double sided sticky foam circle to create the shaker cavity.
This card could be for many different occasions, birthday, encouragement, get well - so I haven't stamped anything inside the card yet.

Inkspirational #298 Mood Board - With Gratitude

Here's my Design Team card for Inkspirational #298 which is a lovely Mood Board.

I was inspired by the fall foliage photo and made a Thanksgiving card.

I used Tim Holtz/Sizzix Bigz die Layered Leaf to cut the leaf out of watercolor paper.  I rubbed Dox Rusty Hinge Ink on my craft mat, spritzed with water and pounced the leaf in the ink.  I dried the leaf and then did the same process inking with DOX Crackling Campfire ink, leaving some spots un-inked.

Then I layered the die cut leaf over a piece of patterned paper using foam dots.  The sentiment stamp is from Taylored Expressions cut with Mini Strips die also from Taylored Expressions.  It is up on foam dots as well.

We can't wait to see what inspires you on this fun mood board!  Please link up your cards by by 9/22.  You'll find more inspiration from the rest of the Design Team as well as Mr. Linky over at Inkspirational!

August Card Chain Challenge Reveal - Plant Seeds of Kindness

It's time for the reveal over at the Card Chain Challenge where they show all the cards sent and received around the world in August.

I sent this card to Robyn in Australia and received a card from Imke in Germany!

We are given options to choose from: a sketch, a color palette, themes, products and techniques.  We can choose one, a few or all of them!

For this card, I chose the color palette

The themes: vegetables and friendship
The technique: stenciling.
The pea pod and carrots are red rubber stamps from a really old Stampin' Up set that I kept because the veggies are so fun!  The sentiment is from a retired Flower Garden Sentiments set from Papertrey Ink and the stencil is Charming by Lavinia.

So please check out the Card Chain Challenge and see if it's something you'd like to participate in - you just have to send a card to a person linked up next to you.  You can play one month, every month, once or twice a year?  You only play if you sign up.

So check out all the cards exchanged in August over at The Card Chain Challenge!  and please join us for Sept - you have until Sept 6th to sign up!
